JULY 2010 TIPS: WHAT’S FRESH @ the DALLAS FARMER’S MARKET…

By Christine McKenny

I have visited the Dallas Farmer’s Market the past 3 weekends! I advise going to Shed 1 which houses all of the local farmers…who can offer the freshest, just picked produce!

:

In recent weeks, I found farm fresh…
- Watermelon (Look for the Baugh Farms sign! Don and Charley Baugh pick the watermelons — red and yellow meat — the night before! They don’t get any fresher…or tastier! They also sell home grown tomatoes and cantaloupe!)
- Blueberries
- Figs
- Bell peppers and many other types of peppers
- Cantaloupe
- Corn
- Basil
- Purple onion
- plums
- peaches
- okra
- eggplant
- squash
- cucumber
- tomatoe
s (I like Lemley’s the best! Their tomatoes are delicious and they have many types.)
- green beans
- peppers
- blackberries
- potatoes
- onions
- black eye peas
- beets and MORE!

Shed 2: Eateries and Specialty Foods

I also visited Shed 2 and bought products from Texas Hill Country Olive Oil Co. I purchase some of their olive oil and the Peach Balsamic Vinegar….and combined, they are DELICIOUS! I have been drizzling them over fresh tomatoes (bought at Lemley’s in Shed 1), basil and crumbled feta or goat cheese. It is so good, I craved it everyday! It is my summer salad! For more on

ALSO,  TRY Chad & Lilia Houser’s Cucumber Tomato Salad…perfect for summer! They prefer Lemley’s tomatoes, too! http://intheloopkids.com/?cat=443
